1/25/2011 1:19:32 AM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Jan 24: In view of the BJP'S 'Ekta Yatra', there would be no vehicular traffic from Jammu to Srinagar Tuesday. The BJP's Ekta Yatra is scheduled to leave Jammu for Srinagar tomorrow to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk on Republic Day. A number of BJP activists have already arrived in Srinagar and were staying in some areas which are considered safe. Only one-way traffic was being allowed by the authorities on the
Srinagar-Jammu national highway since the first week of January to avoid any accident due to slippery road conditions caused by snow. Under this order, vehicles were being allowed to ply from Jammu and Srinagar every alternate day.
However, the authorities, late last night announced that traffic would ply from Jammu to Srinagar today and no vehicle from Srinagar would be allowed beyond Qazigund, gateway to Kashmir. There was also traffic from Jammu to Srinagar yesterday.
Vehicles which left Srinagar this morning as per earlier schedule, remained stranded at Qazigund.
The announcement said the traffic would ply from Srinagar to Jammu tomorrow and no vehicle from Jammu would be allowed from the winter capital.
The Ekta Yatra was scheduled to leave Jammu tomorrow morning to reach Srinagar in the evening to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk on January 26 morning before returning to Jammu the same day.The move is seen as a provocative act by almost all national mainstream parties and chief minister Omar Abdullah has declined to grant permission to the BJP to hoist the flag. Meanwhile, a number of BJP activists had already arrived in Srinagar and were staying at different places, including Indra Nagar and Shivpora.Police have so far arrested more than 10 BJP local activists, including state vice-president Sofi Yousuf, who was under custody for the past three days in Srinagar.
