Police launch massive manhunt
1/25/2011 1:20:04 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 24: Notwithstanding massive security arrangements to keep the BJP and its Yuva Morcha activists away from Srinagar's city centre, Lal Chowk, a local news agency believes scores of activists have managed to sneak into the summer capital on January 21 and 22.
The agency quoting police sources said the activists went into hiding immediately after their arrival in Srinagar. The police, sources said, have launched a massive manhunt to nab the activists, who will try to reach Lal Chowk on January 26.
The police have sought help from state's intelligence sleuths to ascertain the whereabouts of the hiding BJP/Yuva Morcha activists. The police raided several placers in Gogji Bagh, Ram Bagh, Barzulla , Sonawar, Jawahar Nagar and Solina areas of the city during the preceding night. However, the activists could not be found.
Suspecting that the activists might be hiding in temples in the city, the police are maintaining strict vigil on places of worship and Dharshallas run by them, reports said.
A worried police department, reports said, have constituted special teams to arrest the hiding activists on January 26 to prevent them from reaching the city centre.
Meanwhile, the police took into custody two local activists of the BJP when they disembarked from a vehicle at Lal Chowk today. The police claimed recovery of hundreds of posters seeking participation of people in the Eakta Yatra from their possession. One of them has been identified as Muhammad Yusuf Budana of Anantnag.
Late last evening, the police took into custody two brothers hailing from Tengpora when they tried to hoist the Tricolort at Lal Chowk. They have been identified as Mairaj-ud-Din and Aijaz Ahmad.
With today's arrests the number of BJP activists who have been taken into custody since the past few days has gone up to 11. The arrestees include the provincial chief of the BJP.
