Army to upgrade communication network in border areas | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 25: The Corps of Signals plans to upgrade the communication network in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources said that the need for further strengthening and renovating the communication system has been felt following reports that highly sophisticated communication network across the LOC had facilitated Pakistani troops to remain touch with various areas and to monitor the movement of Indian forces. Reports said that the Corps of Signals plans to start the upgradation scheme in Tangdhar sector in north Kashmir. According to these reports, in various border areas the communication network has been affected by weather vagaries, including heavy snow during the winter months. At a number of places in the border areas the optical fibre cords need to be replaced by new stuff as the old fibres have become outdated. Reports said that whether in peace or war the communication system needs to remain intact. As far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned the border belts have remained tense, even in peace times, because of frequent infiltration bids by militants from across the LOC and the International Border. During the last 21 years the border has been used by the Pakistani agencies for smuggling weapons, ammunition and explosives into Jammu and Kashmir which the militants have been using while targeting security forces and political leaders. It is in this context that the Corps of Signals has decided to further strengthen and renovate the communication network which was required for transmission of messages from one unit or from one post to the other border outpost. Official sources said that improved communication system in the border areas could be used for intercepting messages sent or received by militants and their handlers across the border. In certain cases the Corps of Signals experts have been inconvenienced by power shortage and load shedding in running some equipment and hence it has decided to install additional number of generators in the border areas which could be used also for keeping sensors and other gadgets besides the computers functional.
