Eventful R’Day celebrations in J&K
1/27/2011 5:59:07 PM
Even if the BJP or its youth wing, BJYM,had not announced its programme of hoisting the national flag at Lal Chowk on January 26 the Republic Day celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir would have not been incident free.Right from 1989-90 when Pakistan sponsored insurgency took roots the Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir are usually eventful in the sense that the state witnesses some incidents of clashes between the security forces and the separatists or in the shape of a section of people either hoisting black flags or Pakistani flags on housetops and on electric poles. On many an occasions groups of militants have been celebrating the Pakistan’s independence Day by holding parades where the guntoting youths display their fire power. And this time the Republic Day celebrations hit newspaper headlines with curfew restrictions in Srinagar, section 144CRPC in Jammu, clashes between the BJYM activists and the security forces while  protesting against the Government’s steps for preventing the Sangh parivar activists from travelling to Srinagar for the purpose of hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk.Courting arrest by sever al hundred BJYM and BJP activists was another sidelight of the turmoil.
By announcing its programme on hoisting tricolour on the Republic Day at Lal chowk the Sangh Parivar has been responsible for an impression having gained  ground which seems to have convinced many people to believe that BJP and its sister organisations wanted to conquer Kashmir,as if lost by India, by hoisting the flag. Was the Sangh parivar trying to show to the world that Kashmir which has not endorsed the instrument of accession signed by the last Dogra ruler,Hari Singh, and the first Prime Minister of the state,Sheikh Abdullah,in 1947,had become part of India by unfurling the national flag at Lal Chowk ?If the leaders and the activists of the BJP and the BYJM do not believe in such a theory why then they picked up only Lal Chowk for the flag hoisting ceremony ? Why not other states for the unfurling of the tricolour ?Agreed that the Sangh Parivar wanted to undo the damage caused by Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah’s none too old statement in  which he had stated that Jammu and Kashmir had not merged with India in 1947-48 but was it necessary for the BJP and its youth wing to choose flag hoisting as the only instrument for defeating those forcees that did not believe in the total integration of the state with rest of the country? This is one aspect of the story. The other aspect is the intriguing role the separatists and some anti-India forces in Kashmir have been playing while opposing flag hoisting ceremony at Lal Chowk.
Over the years the national flag is being hoisted at official functions in Srinagar and other district headquarters on the Independence and Republic Days. These very separatists do not oppose such functions. The paramilitary forces have been hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk on the Republic Day since 1991 and people like Mohd.Yasin Mailk have not announced any Lal Chowk chalo programme for foiling flag hoisting ceremony in the past.
The hardliners among the separatists, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, have stated that whether the tricolour was hoisted at Lal Chowk or not it would have no impact on the nature of the Kashmir problem. This way they have claimed that the problem will continue to exist if the BJP succeeds in hoisting the flag or is prevented from doing so. If it is the case or if it is their thinking why should the separatists oppose the BJYM plan on hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk. Unfortunately Omar Abdullah has inadvertently sided with the separatists by making it difficult for the BYJM activists and other BJP leaders in making it to Srinagar. As head of the state he should have taken adequate measures for ensuring incident free Republic Day celebrations even after allowing the BJYM activists to unfurl the national flag at Lal Chowk.
