On R-Day, police cause cracks in fourth estate
1/27/2011 6:04:03 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 26: In a bid to prevent Bharataya Janata party (BJP) and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activists from hoisting their respective flags atop the Clock Tower in historic Lal Chowk, the police had laid siege to the Press Enclave at posh Residency Road in the summer capital today.
According to reports, the police laid siege to the Press Enclave in wee hours today. Several barbed wire coils were used to keep the media persons away from Lal Chowk. Some of them who managed to come out of the cordon were prevented from marching ahead. The special passes issued by the Department of Information were not honoured. Most of the journalists boycotted the Republic Day function to protest what they called onslaught on the fourth estate.
The photojournalists and reporters were not even allowed to go to Bakshi stadium where the main function in connection with Republic Day celebrations was to be held. Later, the Department of Information officials intervened and succeeded in arranging a few vehicles owned by the Jammu Kashmir Police to take them to the stadium.
The journalists and police exchanged heated arguments near Lal Chowk when they tried to cover the arrest of around six non-resident BJP activists from a hotel. On a tip off, reports said, the police raided a hotel and took into custody six BJP activists who were finalizing arrangements to hoist the tricolor atop the Clock Tower. The police reportedly seized the cameras of the journalists to prevent them from covering the arrest.
Reports said the police seized their tapes. IBN and ETV videographers, Ali Muhammad and Shabir Shah were scolded by angry police men. The police later broke Shah's camera, said the reports.
The recently launched Kashmir Editor's Conference head by Rashid Rahi has taken strong note of the `assault on freedom of press.' Rahi said: "The police attitude defeated the very object of democracy."
