Cong a major loser, BJP a major gainer from Yatra mess
1/27/2011 6:04:56 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 26: Apparently the Congress party, if no other organisation, has lost a pound of flesh from the abortive attempt by the BJYM and the BJP activists at hoisting the national flag on Gantaghar in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar on Wednesday. And the Akali led Government in Punjab has also contributed towards developments that went against the interests of the Congress not only in Jammu but in the neighbouring states when it refused to prevent the BJP and BJYM leaders and activists from entering into Lakhanpur area of Jammu.
No doubt the Sangh Parivar has not been able to fulfill its commitment on hoisting the tricolour in Lal Chowk it has, on the other hand, proved a gainer in the Jammu region and even in other states of the country. If the National Conference leadership claims to have gained added political weight and advantage in the Kashmir valley it is mistaken. It has gained some added political mileage by preventing the activists of the Sangh parivar from entering into the valley but whatever gains it had achieved by foiling the BJP flag hoisting plan has been lost by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's strict instructions to the security forces to foil JKLF plan on Lal Chowk chalo. A number of JKLF leaders and activists, including its chief, Mohd. Yasin Mailk, were arrested.
It is only the Congress that has been a major loser in the Jammu region. The loss for it has been similar to the one it suffered when people in the Jammu region rose like a volcano while protesting over the revocation of land diversion order in favour of the Amarnath Shrine Board in 2008. And it was because of this loss that the Congress could win only 17 seats in 2008 election against 20 in 2002 poll besides some six seats its supporters has bagged in 2002 while contesting as independent candidates. The BJP, which was in the forefront of the land row, won 11 seats in 2008 poll against one in 2002 election.
There would have been a bigger anti-congress wave in 2008 Assembly election had not a senior Congress leader, Raman Bhalla, given vent to his anger against the revocation of the land diversion order. In fact on a couple of occasions, Bhalla blessed the protesters demanding withdrawal of the revocation order.
This time the Congress leaders belonging to the Jammu region thought that since the flag hoisting issue was the BJP's creation it need not oppose Omar Abdullah's decision to deal firmly with the activists of the BJYM and BJP when the congress high command and the UPA Government had backed Omar's stand on the issue. However, when the same congress leaders hailing from the Jammu region felt the pulse of the angry people they opted for maintaining total silence on the issue. They preferred to keep Omar Abdullah within the firing range of the saffron brigade and its supporters.
This way whatever small gains the National Conference had achieved in the Kashmir valley have been lost in the Jammu region where also the party has pockets of influence. Since the BJP, within the state and at the national level, had no major issue for hammering the head of the Congress the developments right from Lakhanpur to Srinagar during the Ekta Yatra have come handy to it to embarrass the Congress in the entire country. And whatever political losses the BJP in the Jammu region had suffered during the last two years seem to have been compensated by the Yatra episode.
