| JU celebrates International year of Chemistry | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 27: In order to celebrate the International year of Chemistry – 2011, the Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, under the aegis of Chemical Society, has taken an initiative to organize a series of academic events in 2011 related to the recent developments in Chemistry and allied sciences.
The first such event was organized in the Seminar Hall of Computer Sciences where a popular lecture entitled, “Organic Chemistry and Drug Discovery”, was delivered by Dr. Ram A. Vishwakarma, Director, IIIM Jammu,
Dr. Ram delivered the lecture on the journey of bench Chemistry to bed side drugs and the role of natural products in this course. The function was presided over by Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor of the Jammu University who laid emphasis on the importance of Chemistry in human life which acts as a bridge between life sciences and physical world. He also pressed for the need of the collaborative work among various disciplines for the benefit of the society.
Prof. Rajive Gupta, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, introduced the speaker to the audience while Prof. Meena Sharma, Head of the Department, briefed about the various activities presently going on in the Department and also spoke about the future plans scheduled to be held in this regard. Among those present were various Head of the
Departments, faculty members from University and various Degree Colleges, Officers from the University, research scholars and students.
The former faculty members from the Department of Chemistry namely, Prof. B.L. Kalsotra, Prof. C.S. Andotra and Prof. R.L. Sharma also graced the occasion. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. K.K.
Kapoor.
