Congress worried over BJP gains from failed yatra | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 27 :-Leaders of the state unit of the Congress plan to meet the AICC leaders, especially Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, with a request that they should intervene and force the dissidents led by the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad to fall in line with the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz. Party sources said that the need for seeking intervention by the Congress high command for ending the conflict between the dissidents and the loyalists was felt after an impression has gained ground in the state that the failed Ekta Yatra had given major gains to the BJP and if there was any loser it was the Congress. A number of congress leaders, belonging to the camp of the loyalists preferring anonymity said that wrong handling of the Ekta Yatra by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had given much needed political advantage to the BJP. It is in this connection that the Congress leaders belonging to the Jammu region want the party high command to taken in hand strict measures which could promote unity among all sections of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. These Congress leaders say that the party had to face ire of the people when they were blamed for having sided with Omar Abdullah who had stated that the Jammu and Kashmir state had not merged with the union of India. According to these leaders the dissidents owing allegiance to Azad did not allow Soz to function as PCC Chief freely. On occasions these dissidents were creating problems for Soz whose instructions were being flouted by them. The loyalists have conveyed to the party high command that if the dissidents were not tamed the congress would suffer severe erosion in its strength in Jammu and Kashmir which could provide space for the separatists to raise their heads.
