Sufi's name finally through for CIC post | But the 'hunt' still on for two Commissioners...... | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 27: GR Sufi's name is finally through for the coveted post of Chief Information Commissioner of the J&K state. His name has been recommended by the high level committee headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah which met here today after delaying the matter for months on one pretext or the other. The meeting for selection of names from amongst a list of names was postponed twice for 'want' of Mehbooba Mufti's presence, a pre requisite in her capacity as leader of Opposition. Sufi, currently Chief commissioner of Income Tax, Amritsar Division, has to reach his superannuation in a very short period of time. Sufi's name for the post was already in circulation for the Information Commission among few other bureaucrats, mostly retired or about to retire who were lobbying for it. In fact, it was only few days back Early times reported the matter and mentioned his name as almost confirmed. Sufi, currently Chief commissioner of Income Tax, Amritsar Division, has to reach his superannuation in a very short period of time. A senior officer of Indian Revenue Service, 1977 batch, G.R. Sofi is presently Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, Amritsar Region, which includes Jammu and Kashmir also. In his Bio data, the government has chosen to appendage with the brief news, probably to justify his presence in the Commission on this post, Sufi has been described as having remained associated with RTI in different capacities to ensure the transparency. So far so good and be that as it may. The vital thing remains the matter has finally been taken up. Even though his name has been recommended by the selection committee, a formal appointed has to be preceded by the approval of J&K Governor NN Vohra. While the much delayed and many times postponed meeting of this committee finally took place, the good news is recommendation of a name for the CIC with consensus of all the three members, third one being Deputy Chief Minister of the state Tara Chand. But surprisingly, the committee has chosen not to recommend two other names for the posts of Information Commissioners in today's meeting which makes the 'much delayed and dithered task' half done again. They have still kept the matter rather in suspended animation. After great persuasion, which included writing a formal letter to clear the doubts and apprehensions she had raised about NC led government intentions on the choice of names for the SIC, the government finally succeeded in getting Mehbooba Mufti on board, which made the meeting possible today. The government convened the meeting twice in the past but it was again postponed for she had gone abroad. Though, the panel has desired to meet once again for selection of Information Commissioners, there are few takers for this assurance, given the kind of 'dramatics' seen in the past. What is even more surprising is the fact that the panel had a list of few more persons beyond whom neither the allies in coalition nor the opposition member would make a choice for the two posts, a decision which would have clicked the things for early functioning of the Commission. According to highly placed sources, the committee members did take up and discuss the other names but a immediate 'consensus' could not be build which is why they have kept it hanging till next meeting, decided to be held before Assembly session. Though the names have been discussed, one wonders why the panel decided to 'finalise' the two names in next round of meeting. |
