Govt to lay emphasis on silk production: Mir

JAMMU, Jan 28: The Department of Sericulture has decided to lay emphasis on plantation of mulberry plants on a massive scale so that the state was able to increase the annual cocoon production from eight lakh kgs to over 10 lakh kgs within next two years.
Stating this Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, said that even after the militancy related violence had affected silk industry it has started showing signs of revival. He said that hitherto out of eight lakh kgs of cocoon produced only 25 to 30 per cent would be used within the state but measures were taken to ensure that more than 50 percent cocoons was used by the silk units.
In reply to a question, the Minister said that he would take up with the Department of industries the need for giving nod to setting up more silk production units in the st ate so that more and more cocoons were utilised within Jammu and Kashmir.
He said there was scope for setting up units forewing, weaving of cloth on handlooms and power looms, printing of silk fabric and garments.
Asked what steps the Government had initiated for providing market cover to silk weaving units and to those producing cocoons Mir said that a corpus fund was in operation for market intervention, running silk exchanges and cocoon bank. He said that the revolving fund would not be allowed to suffer on account of financial resources.
Reminded whether the import of Chinese silk posed a threat to the Kashmir silk manufacturers Mir said that Kashmir silk was always rated as the best in the world.He said that "we were trying hard to increase the market potential in different states in the country for Kashmir silk." Asked whether the Government would export silk to foreign countries Mir said that the Indian market was sufficient to consume the entire silk produce whether it was in the shape of fabric, silk sarees, garments etc.
Mir has decided to inspect various areas in the state for monitoring the pace of mulberry plantation programme.
