EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 28: Jai Jawan Jai Kissan Development Committee today paid floral tributes to freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai on his 146th birth anniversary at its head office, Vikas Nagar Sarwal.
Members of the committee recalled the contribution of Lala Lajpat Rai, popularly known as Punjab Kesari (the Lion of Punjab). The president of the committee, Anil Sharma while paying tributes to Lala Lajpat Rai, who was born on January 28, 1865 in Dhudike (now in Moga district, Punjab), described him as a great visionary who opened the Punjab National Bank’s first branch at Lahore with a capital of Rs 20,000.
“Lajpat Rai created a career of reforming Indian policy through politics and writing. In 1928, Lajpat Rai led a procession with Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya to demonstrate against the Simon Commission. During this procession, Lajpat Rai became the target of a lathi charge,” Sharma remembered.
The committee also distributed sweets and fruits among the participants and asked the youth to follow his footsteps.
