Who identifies with state flag in JK? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 28: The National Conference and its coalition partner have sought stern action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists who attacked the Finance Minister's car on Republic day and `desecrated' the state flag. The activists have been taken into custody and remanded to judicial custody. The verbal dual between National Conference (NC) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) over the state flag has been going on for quite some time now. The BJP legislators even made some statements on the floor of the Legislative Assembly last year. However, as this dual continues; the commoner in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh seems totally indifferent to the issue. A question arises. Whose flag is this by the way? The BJP leader, Ashok Khajuria denounced the state flag in December last year. His statement evoked severe reaction from the National Conference and the Awami National Conference (ANC) headed by Sher-e-Kashmir's daughter, Khalida Shah. Both ANC and NC have said that the people of state had laid down their lives for the flag. "People of Kashmir identify themselves with the flag", Khalida said in a statement issued soon after. A visibly angry leader of the NC and MLA Hazratbal, Dr Mustafa Kamal lashed out at BJP leader Ashok Khujuria for his remarks over the state flag. "The flag has been accepted by New Delhi and Article 370 of the Indian constitution makes a mention of it", he said. Kamal also used words like `anti-national element' for Khujuria and `anti-Muslim' for BJP. Now the issue has come to the fore yet again with the attack on Finance Minister's car. Amid all this political drama, the commoner in all the regions of the state has remained indifferent much to the disappointment of NC. There is no denying the fact that Kashmiris, by and large identified themselves with the flag during Sher-e-Kashmir's life. But contemporary Kashmir has a different story to tell. "The priorities in Kashmir have changed. Today Kashmiris perceive the flag as a symbol of enslavement", said a Kashmir University teacher preferring anonymity. Jammu people did not like the flag from the day one. They even launched an agitation against it. And as far as the people in Ladakah are concerned, they are as indifferent to the flag as the present day Kashmiri. Then whose aspirations does the red flag with three white lines and a plough represent? Can the NC do some explaining please? |
