Flag hoisting issue was linked to wrong Kashmir policy: Jaitley | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI : Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley today paid a left handed complement to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that the PM must be a good politician because he had survived the rough and tumble of politics for over six years but certainly he was not successful as far as tiding over the economic situation in the country. Arun Jaitley said the whole issue was linked to wrong Kashmir policy and all the BJP wanted was give the common Kashmiris jobs and development but be tough with separatists. But here the nationalist youths carrying tricolour flag was seemed as an offence while the separatists elements discussing the ways of seceding was to be treated as ‘freedom of speech’, he lamented. Answering questions regarding the arrest of himself along with his Lok Sabha counterpart Sushma Swaraj, Mr Jaitley said it was probably first Republic Day that went off without the participation of the Leaders of Opposition. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Home Minister P Chidambaram had ensured ‘psychological surrender’ to the separatist through their actions. Mr Abdullah was concerned about his dwindling popularity and all he did was to give message to the secessionists that the Government did not allow flag hoisting by BJP. As far as the Home Minister was concerned he did not gain anything—“Na Maya mili Na Ram”, he said. In an interview to a news channel Mr Jaitley said that there was popular belief that Dr Singh is a good economist and a bad politician but the events in the country shows that this perception was wrong. The food inflation in the country has been consistently hovering in the double digits for the last few years but at the same time he has been able to hold on to his chair for nearly seven years. The high inflation in food commodities is a conspiracy against the people and the PM’s economic skills were nowhere in the display. He said since he has been able to hold on to his post for such a long time, he must be a good politician, he remarked. He said during the NDA regime food was a surplus economy and the rate of inflation was normal unlike the double digit inflation witnessed in the last three to four years and there was no mechanism to check the price spiralling was in place in the Government, he said. Touching upon the happenings in Davos where the world CEOs were lukewarm in their perception about the India’s economic prospects, Mr Jaitley said it was because the Government was unable to put the second generation reforms in place. About the perception in the political circles that the PM was clean and honest person, Mr Jaitley said he may be a clean person but he has a tendency to look the other way when major scandals of corruption broke out he said referring to inability to intervene in the scandals like 2G spectrum allocation which resulted in a loss of 1.76 lakh crore of revenue to the exchequer. Asked about the BJP allowing the functioning of Budget Session, Mr Jaitley said that the Opposition would persist with the Joint Parliamentary Committee demand for probing the major scandals like 2G spectrum allocation, Commonwealth Games loot and Adarsh Housing Society. Much would depend on the attitude of the Government on the JPC demand. If the Opposition were not tough during the Winter Session, than even the resignation of Communications Minister A Raja would not have taken place, he contended adding that the PM should accept the demand for the JPC. About the allegations of corruption and nepotism faced by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Mr Jaitley said the party was ‘concerned’ about the allegation and had ordered for an ‘internal probe’. However the allegations were not of the same level as the 2G, which was established through institutions like Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
