7th tree talk hosted at G G M Sc College | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU Jan 30: Amidst mild showers and drizzle, 7th Tree Talk was hosted today at G G M Science College campus where tree lovers , taxonomists , bird watchers, biology students, local poets, artists ,historians , Ayurvedic practioners , women and children participated . Ex –Principal, Chief Conservator of Forests, Sain Dass Swatantra highlighted heritage status of the college. Senior forest officer O P Sharma shared that among sacred medicinal trees , tree lovers need to notice useful trees . Renowned Hindi Poet Mahraj Krishan Santoshi recited his mindboggling composition on tree heritage in its historical context and need to apprise younger generation about tree benefits and tree culture . He traced history of Chinar locally called Bouin or Booni , word derived from Bhawani and its importance in Kashmiri culture . O P Vidyarthi recited his Hindi poem –Ped Ped Parmeshwar which was appreciated by tree lovers . DIG Crime , Yoginder Kaul highlighted importance of forest in state economy and need of mass awareness among grass root functionaries of forest and police functionaries to check forest related crimes and offences . He shared his concern regarding degradation of critical habitats and need to rehabilitate such areas with modern tools and technology . During tree talk , it was disclosed that yellow oleander which is deadly poisonous tree was used by some birds like Asian Koel ( Kali Kol in Dogri ) , Red vented Bulbul ( Peenjah in Dogri),Brahminy Myna ( Shaari in Bhaderwahi ),Common Myna , Grey Hornbill ( Dohaa in Dogri ) without any ill effects of its poisoning . While referring to Millingtonia , it was told that tree flowers at night and shed its flowers in the early morning . Its dried flowers are used as bronchodilator and root as lung tonic . While introducing Prof Mohd Salim , Head Agroforestry Division , SKUAST , Jammu , to the tree lovers , O P Sharma highlighted that Raj Harad of Mathwar is unique in its secondary metabolites and fetches high price in Amritsar Mandi . It is a matter of pride that Dr Salim Mohd has successfully grafted superior Raj Harad and has achieved its multiplication on large scale to distribute among farmers and medicinal plant growers of Jammu region . Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Prof Veena Sumbria had all the praise for innovative tree talk . Prof Botany , Attri from Degree college Udhampur invited tree lovers to Udhampur and share their tree concerns . Prof Neeru Dhalla , expert on Odonata highlighted importance of dragonflies in the intricate web of life and added that today nature lovers are taking interest in Dragonfly watching nicknamed as Oding . Local Bird watcher Guldev shared his valuable inputs on rare birds like Spoonbill ( Chamachbujja , Platelia leucordia ) , Common Crane ( Grus grus , Koonj ) , Yellowfooted Green Pigeon ( Hariyal , Preu , Treron phoenicopterus ) as his new sightings of recent times . Local Vaidya from Akhnoor Gopal Krishan Sharma had come with dozen samples of medicinal products . Prominent speakers among participants included Dr Mohd Salim , Dr Lalit Sharma ,O P Bakshi , Manjit Singh , Zuber Ahmad Shah , Abdul Rehman Lone , Hamidulla Mir , Sanjiv , Ashok , Neeraj , Jyoti Raina , Mohd Rafi , Ashok Gandotra , Tariq Mahmood , Nitin Khajuria , Ashish Mahajan , Yasin Chaudhary and others .. Tree Talk organizers disclosed that a Tree Lovers Award is going to be instituted for best Tree Talk participant and it will be announced shortly .
