Non issue of Voter Identity Cards irks people
1/30/2011 11:54:04 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 30: The state government has finally decided to go ahead with the Municipal elections. Finance minister Saturday said that all problems had been solved and elections shall be held in April. This leaves the government with just two months to make the arrangements for the elections. And with thousands of voters awaiting election identity cards, the concerned have to push the process to meet the dead line.
Thousands of voters in Kashmir could not get the important document during the Assembly and Parliamentary elections held in 2008. No reason has been given for withholding the identity cards. They have urged the concerned to speed up the process. Pertinent to mention, every voter is entitled to receive Rs 15 from the field staff who call on him to ascertain his residential proof and other vital details. The non-issuance of cards to thousands of people, sources believe, smacks of a scam. However, a block level officer (BLO) rejects this allegation as baseless. Preferring anonymity, he told Early Times that thousands of election identity cards were gathering dust in the office of the returning officer at Srinagar. According to him, the cards have been withheld for unknown reasons.
According to informed sources, the cards of thousands of voters have been withheld for `security reasons'. The sources said the election cards issued previously were used by anti-national and anti-social elements. All such cards, they said, were canceled. The authorities at New Delhi urged the state government to issue fresh identity cards to the voters after proper scrutiny to prevent their misuse by unscrupulous elements. However, thousands of voters were left high and dry. Many among them were willing to go to the booths during the Assembly elections notwithstanding the boycott call by the separatists. They could not, however, exercise their franchise for want of voter identity cards.
Meanwhile, nobody in the concerned department was available for comment.
