Restore Trans LoC telephonic ties
2/1/2011 12:39:15 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 31: Notwithstanding the assurance of the coalition government to strengthen relations between people living across the LoC, the telephonic ties have not been restored between Pakistan administered Kashmir and this part of the state till date.
The Finance Minister, while presenting the budget last year promised restoration of telephonic ties across the LoC. Although Rather's budget evoked widespread criticism, the people welcome the Finance Minister's announcement. The divided families of the state felt relieved.
Soon after, the Chief Minister while addressing a public rally at Kupwara talked about a rail link across the LoC. The Chief Minister evoked thundering applause from the audience. Omar said: "In the era of globalization there is need to strengthen relations between this part of the state and the one administered by Pakistan."
The need for improved relations between the two parts of the state was felt by the Government of India as well. A bus service was started from Srinagar to Mzaffarabad during Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led coalition rule. The Prime Minister himself flagged off the bus. But getting a berth in the bus was made very difficult by the state's intelligence sleuths.
The bus was an important confidence building measure (CBM) but it failed to achieve the objective. The rail link if at all becomes operational will also fail to bind the people of the divided state in bonds of love, understanding and friendship.
The goal can be achieved easily by restoring the telephonic ties across the LoC. The ties were snapped for security reasons in 1990 when the armed conflict commenced. However, the authorities on this side of the divide could not block the incoming calls. The reluctance of the government to restore the ties makes no sense.
One year has passed since the Finance Minister made the promise on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. There is no denying the fact that a politician cannot be expected to fulfil all the promises he makes. But when a promise is made on the floor of the house, it must be kept.
