| Workshop on Natural Resources management organized | | Ajaz stresses for judicious use of natural resources | |
JAMMU NOV-09- Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Jammu organized a two-day National Workshop on ‘Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Hill Agriculture’ in collaboration with Soil Conservation Society of India (SCSI) here today. Minister of State for Agriculture Ajaz Ahmed Khan inaugurated the workshop. Addressing the workshop the Minister emphasized the need for greater application of technology to improve farming in hilly areas, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. ‘The judicious use of water and other natural resources is imperative so that the future general does not suffer’ he stressed. He said that national level workshop on resource management with emphasis of eco-friendly hill agriculture is a welcome step adding that sustained efforts should be made to pull the farmers out of their marginal existence and to propel hilly region farmers to the national and global platform. Khan expressed the hope that the workshop will stress on the need and urgency on the part of all concerned and interested to promote conspicuous improvement in management of natural resources and sustainability of Agro-eco system for the overall benefit of the society. Prof Nagendra Sharma Vice Chancellor SKUAST Jammu in his presidential address dwelt on the efforts made by the scientists of the University to address farm-related problems and stressed on the innovative technologies for conserving the top soil layer which is the most fertile. He said the time has come to reengineer programmers with multi-disciplinary system approach for natural resources management for sustaining agricultural production. The scientists and researchers shall have to develop site specific, feasible and low cost technologies so that farmers could easily adopt and improve the productivity, he added. He hoped that the outcome of the workshop would be very meaningful and will be of immense use for scientists and science administrators adding that the workshop would among other things discuss the important issues on current problems related to soil management, water conservation, environmental protection, wasteland managements. Dr Suraj Bhan President SCSI New Delhi congratulated the Jammu Chapter of the Society for initiating the activities and organizing the National Workshop on very important topic and stressed the need for involvement of every individual in conserving the natural resources. Earlier, Dr R K Raina Associate Dean FOA welcomed the participants and the expert speakers drawn from different parts of the country .Dr Sanjay Arora presented vote of thanks.
