Employees rally lathicharged, leaders arrested

JAMMU, Feb 1: Stage is set for showdown between employees and state government over the later’s use of force on the peacefully agitating employees.
Employees maintain that state government has already failed to honour its own commitments with regard to release of 6th pay commission arrears and settling other issues concerning welfare of employees and their service rules in the last couple of months.
Dejected with the response of the state government, employees had announced programme to gherao civil secretariat building to lodge protest and remind the state government of its past promises. President employees Joint action committee Abdul Qayoom Wani said that the state government failed to implement its own decisions taken at the highest level and now instead of holding parleys with the representatives of the employees and discussing schedule of release of arrears, it is trying to crush voice of the employees.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) leaders today took to streets under the leadership of senior leaders Abdul Qayoom Wani and Muntazir Mohidin to stage protest in front of Civil Secretariat Jammu against state government’s indifferent attitude towards their legitimate demands.
Earlier as per the programme, employee leaders from all over state assembled at Municipal Corporation Jammu wearing black badges and began marching towards civil secretariat for two hour Dharna outside the civil secretariat to press for their demands. Heavy police deployment was seen all along the road leading to the secretariat.
When the JCC procession reached Shalimar Chowk, police swung into action and lathicharged employee leaders. Several employees’ leaders got injured during the scuffle and police was seen dragging some of the employee leaders. Entire leadership of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) was arrested. Before their arrest, two leaders Abdul Qayoom Wani and Muntazir Mohidin condemned police action and warned state government to desist from adopting ant-employee policy and to shun path of confrontation.
Besides that state government has backtracked from the promises and agreements made with JCC leaders from time to time. Describing state government as ant-employees and anti-people, JCC leaders warned it of dire consequences if demands of employees are not met immediately.
They said that JCC leaders have been trying for amicable settlement of pending demands of employees. He added that government has always tried to suppress employee’s movement by resorting to coercion. On the occasion, Wani announced that employees would begin agitating from February 21, 2011. Protest demonstration shall be held at all three Regional Headquarters of Jammu, Srinagar and Leh.

Pandit, Farid Ahmad Fani, Nusrat Ahmad Beig, Shakeel Ahmad, Shahid Hussain, Syaeed Zakir Peer, Gopal Singh, Khalid Mohmood, Riyaz Soofi, Manzoor Pampori, Farooq Doda, Darshan Singh, Rohit George, Ravinder Bhat, Tasleema Rashid. While as MR. Jaswant Singh, Ab. Rashid Mir, Balvinder Singh, Dharminder Singh, Kulwant Singh, Amrik Singh, PHE Ravi Singh Bhau, Gh. Rasool Bhat, Showkat Ahmad Hakim, Suhail Ahmad Lalla and others addressed the protest.
