EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 1: An undertrial prisoner of Kot-Bhalwal jail today escaped from police custody when he was taken to the GMC hospital along with three other prisoners, including a woman.
While Rahul Gupta alias Pabba, son of Prakash Gupta of Udhampur, and the woman prisoner were to be taken to mental hospital for their check up, the other two were to be got examined at the GMC hospital, police sources said.
A DPL vehicle (JK02AQ/5735) brought all of them from the Kot-Bhalwal jail to GMC hospital in the morning. While two prisoners were taken inside the hospital for medical checkup, Rahul expressed the desire to go to the toilet.
Havaldar Daulat Ram accompanied the handcuffed undertrial to the toilet built close to the hospital boundary wall. Reaching the toilet, he pulled the chain of handcuffs which was tied with the belt of Daulat, got himself freed and fled by scaling the wall. Though Daulat tried to catch hold of him, he jumped on the road outside and melted into the nearby lanes of Bakshi Nagar within Seconds.
Though cops soon fanned across the city in his search, they could not find any clue to his whereabouts. As he was wearing the handcuffs, people could identify him easily and help police in his arrest, the sources added. This was the third time that he had escaped from police custody. In 2007, he had fled twice from the Udhampur police custody while being taken to district court complex there for hearing. He was arrested and booked under PSA last year due to his involvement in several criminal cases in Udhampur. He was lodged in the Kot-Bhalwal jail on August 21 last year.
He and three other prisoners were brought to the hospital by a police team headed by sub-inspector AK Sharma. Doulat and cop Daya Ram were the two gunmen in the vehicle.
The Bakshi Nagar police station had registered a case in this connection. Sources said a departmental inquiry had also been ordered into the incident.
