NZ Cricket Tourney for Deaf begins | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, February 02: The Fifth North Zone Cricket Tournament for Deaf, organised by J&K Police in collaboration with J&K Cricket Association of Deaf, got underway at MA Stadium, here today. Inspector General of Police Jammu, Dilbag Singh declared open the competition. Speaking to the participants and other distinguished gathering, the chief guest appreciated the organizers for the initiative and welcomed the visiting teams from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and host J&K. He also disclosed that after the North Zone event, the Police shall be hosting an international level tournament for deaf in the state. Earlier, in his welcome address, Association president, Vijay Kumar Gupta briefed the gathering about the tournament. This tournament is being organised under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of J&K Police, Jammu while former Ranji player, Rajesh Gill is organizing secretary.
J&K loses opener by 19 runs
J&K XI lost the opening match by a margin of 19 runs. Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, Punjab XI scored 113 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 15 overs. Surinder Singh was top scorer with 31 runs while Jaspreet Singh and Dilbag Singh contributed 26 and 10 runs respectively. From J&K XI, Vivek and Pankaj shared two wickets each, followed by Niaz and Kuldeep, who took apiece each. Later, chasing the target, J&K could make 94 runs losing five wickets in the allotted quota of 15 overs. Arfan Ali was main scorer with 25 runs, followed by Arvinder Kumar, who made 21. From Punjab XI, Karandeep Singh took two wickets while Gurbaksh and Surinder Singh as also Dilbag claimed one each.
Delhi beat Haryana by 9 wkts
In another match of the day, Delhi defeated Haryana by nine wickets. After winning the toss and decided to bat first, Haryana made 108 runs in stipulated 15 overs. Kuldeep Saini remained unbeaten at 21 while Vinay contributed 19. From Delhi XI, Lokesh clinched three wickets and Azar bagged two. Later, Delhi XI overhauled the opponent total in just 11 overs with nine wickets in hand. Shunty played match winning innings of 54 runs while Shiva contributed unbeaten 30. Fahimuddin added 16 not out. Manjit took the only wicket lost by Delhi. Today’s matches were officiated by Shashi (senior), Yogesh and Shashi (junior) while Naresh Kumar was scorer.
