| BGSBU-Scientist Co- organize Indo-US Workshop | | | RAJOUIRI NOV-09 Taking yet another initiative, the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri along with and Scientists from Washington State University and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are co-organizing an Indo-US workshop titled “Invasive Plants in Protected Areas” from 13-17 November 2006 at Corbet Tiger Reserve. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed Zarri of the Centre for Biodiversity Studies of the BGSB University, the key-organizer of the bi-national event will present the findings of research carried by him on the impacts of plant invasive on the Shola-Grassland Ecosystem of the Southern Western Ghats. Several scientists from leading Universities/research institutions of USA and India would attend the workshop. It is important to note that biological invasions by non-indigenous organisms between continents have become a major threat to conservation and costs the global economy well over 100 billion US$ per year. Invasions alter landscapes, reduce local biological diversity, suppress agriculture, cause disease, and alter resource availability to humans. As commerce increases between the U.S. and India the potential for new exotic invasions also increases. Because of the ecological and economic threats posed by new invasions there is urgent need to promote effective international collaboration, communication, and cooperation among ecologists and policy makers. The main objectives of the workshop are to bring U.S. and Indian scientists and policy makers together to share knowledge, research approaches, and responses to exotic invasions, to assess current problems with predicting new exotic invasions, with focus on the specific problems faced by India, to provide a forum for recommending policy towards preventing and combating exotic, invasive species and to develop mechanisms for prevention of invasions and stimulating national and international collaboration for research on mechanisms of invasion and methods for suitable control and eradication.
