State cyclists upbeat about National Games | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 02: The six-member cycling team of Jammu and Kashmir seems optimistic about the ensuing 34th National Games in Jharkhand from February 12. Already earned recognition at the national level, these state cyclists, mostly from Kashmir valley, practice hard to earn desired results in the prestigious competition ahead. Training at the only smooth track available in the Winter Capital at MA Stadium as also that of fly over in the busy city of Jammu, clad in colourful attires these young men shall be competing in three different events. “The six-member team selected by the J&K Cycling Association shall compete in 40 km (individual), 70 km (team) and 160 km (mass start) in the Jharkhand National Games. The boys are practicing from January 27 at the MA Stadium, here,” young cycling coach of the state, Raiz Ahmed told . These well built and soft spoken cyclists were positive about a medal in the 70 km team event. “We are confident to give improved performance in team event this time. The boys have worked hard and are upbeat to take on the opponents,” maintained Riaz. Important to mention here that one of the state boy, Shabir Ahmed Akhoon has already won a gold medal in 25 km mass start event in the National Cycling Championship held in 2006. Another boy, Umar Navi remained fourth in the same event held in Madhya Pradesh in 2006. “The present cycling team does regular practice at 10 km smooth stretch along Dal Lake around the year. While three of them have imported bicycles worth over Rs one lakh, others have Indian made bicycles,” informed Riaz Ahmed.
