Centre urged to introduce horti insurance scheme in J&K | Calls for launching Rajmash, Basmati Mission | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Feb 2: To offset losses to fruit crops due to vagaries of weather and other calamities, the Minister for Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today advocated for introduction of horticulture insurance scheme to protect horticulture produce in Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister was speaking at 82nd Annual General Meeting of National Indian Council of Agriculture Research Society, chaired by the Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar here today. Conveying his gratitude to the Union Agriculture Minister for according special status to the hilly terrain States, including Jammu and Kashmir for availing various incentives, the Minister said that State’s economy is dependent on the horticulture sector and Centre should initiate more steps to strengthen this vital sector. He said that farmers suffer huge losses due to natural calamities every year and Government can hardly afford to compensate them adequately, adding, Crop Insurance Scheme will safeguard the interests of farmers. The Minister called for launching Rajmash and Basmati Mission in Jammu on the pattern of Saffron Mission to give fillip to the production of these rare crops in a big way. He said that Rajmash and Basmati of Jammu are famous world over due to their unique taste and flavor, adding that the initiative will enhance the economic status of farmer community. Laying stress on strengthening the existing infrastructure of marketing facilities, the Minister asked for liberal funding to augment the marketing network across the State. He also stressed on strengthening the procurement system at the district level and establishing processing units for the facilities of the farmers. The Minister advocated for strengthening the functioning of Sher-i-Kashmir Agriculture University in Jammu and improving the research work, enabling the farmers to get latest varieties of seeds and adopt new technologies to boost the production.
