Army opposes use of social network websites in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 2: The Army has taken strong exception to the use of social websites by Kashmiri youth who, according to the Corps Commander of 15 Corps indulge in ant-national activities and incite violence. The Corps Commander, Lt General SA Hasnain while addressing a function in South Kashmir recently said that the Face book and Twitter users in particular were maligning the image of the security forces operating in very difficult conditions in Jammu Kashmir. The Commander said most of the users were persons who wanted Kashmir to remain on boil all time for their vested interests. “They do not want peace to return to the state”, he said. This is the first time when the Army has objected to use of social network websites by Kashmiris. Earlier the police took into custody several Face book users for `inciting violence’. However, all of them were set free after preliminary questioning. The commander’s statement has gained importance as the public protests in Egypt have been linked to the `freedom movement in Kashmir’ by the users. During last years summer agitation the Kashmiri youth used the websites to `apprise the world’ of the developments in Kashmir. Hundreds of photographs and videos showing men in uniform using force against the people were uploaded. A video also showed some Kashmiri youth being stripped by the personnel of Central Reserve Police Personnel (CRPF). The video caused embarrassment to the government of India so much so that the Union Home Minister had to issue a statement questioning the authenticity of the video. A senior police official admitted that the users of Face book and Twitter had been giving sleepless nights to the authorities. He also admitted his failure in taking action against such users. “Most of the persons use pseudonyms”, he said. Informed sources said the government was worried about the possibility of a repeat of 2010 summer agitation.
