People protest as 2 MES men found slaughtered in army cantt at Udhampur | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 02: Two MES men were found slaughtered inside the "high-security" northern command army cantonment near Chopra shop at Udhampur in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. The throats of both of them had been slit mercilessly in the way militants execute killings in the state.SSP, Udhampur, Surinder Gupta, however, categorically ruled out any militant hand in the incident and said police were on the job to identify and apprehend the accused. The killers had slit the throats of MES linemen -- Bodh Raj, son of Parmanand of Batal Baliyan, and Moti Ram, son of Amir Chand of Jib Majalta, besides inflicting multiple stab wounds on their bodies. The incident took place inside the duty room of MES power house near Chopra shop while they were on night duty. Their bodies were found lying in a pool of blood early this morning by some people who lived in the cantonment area. The killings sparked off strong resentment in the area with angry locals joined by MES employees union president Kartar Singh blocking the national highway to vehicular traffic at Chopra Shop.DIG Jagjit Kumar, SSP Gupta, Rehmbal police station SHO and a FSL team visited the spot soon after the matter came to their notice. After completing legal formalities and thorough examination of the spot, police removed the bodies to hospital mortuary where post-mortem was conducted on them. These were later handed over to their families for last rites. "The cantonment is a sensitive area and the murders inside it is definitely a matter of serious concern," the protesters said. After they refused to lift the blockade, police diverted the traffic to the alternate bypass road. They were demanding immediate arrest of the accused, jobs to the kith and kin of the deceased and compensation to their families. They later lifted their dharna following an assurance by MES chief engineer that a sympathetic view would be taken of their demands. The SSP said police were still to find out the motive behind the killings. It could have been money as they had received their salaries only yesterday. "This motive is, however, ruled out as the salary of Moti Ram was recovered from his pocket," Gupta said.He was, however, hopeful of getting clues in the incident at the earliest.
