Fate of CU once again hangs in balance
2/3/2011 9:44:56 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 3: With Central government likely to backtrack from its decision to appoint Amitabh Mattoo as Vice Chancellor of Central University following protests in Jammu, one more academic year seems to get delayed.
Sources said that central government is again studying the option of appointment of Mattoo as VC of CU to be established at Samba after the threat of agitation from people in Jammu region.
According to the sources, the appointment of Prof Amitabh Mattoo as first VC of central university of Jammu was under controversy as many students and political organizationare opposing the decision of the Union HRD Ministry.
It is pertinent to mention here that the President, while approving the appointment of Professor Mattoo, advised the Jammu and Kashmir Government and the university authorities to “maintain the law and order situation in the state following the appointment”. According to the reports, that the appointment of Mattoo to join as VC is still undecided.
Pertinently, two years back the Prime Minister of India had announced two central universities for both Jammu as well as Kashmir. The central university in Kashmir has completed two sessions whereas the post for VC in Jammu Centre University once again expected to be vacant again, not to talk of any session. Likewise, there is possibility that the session will not start this year also.
President National Secular Forum (NSF) Vikas Sharma said ``we have no problem whosoever be the Vice Chancellor of Centre University Jammu, but we want that the government should start the session as soon as possible. As in Kashmir the centre university has completed two sessions’’.
It is pertinent to mention here that various Jammu based parties had termed the Amitabh Mattoo’s appointment as first Vice-Chancellor of Jammu Central University, despite widespread resentment, protest demonstration representations - a broad daylight murder of democracy and extension of British Raj.
