Takeover of Centaur Lake view hotel | Cheated? J&K govt approaches civil aviation ministry | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 3: Jammu and Kashmir government has formally approached Union Ministry for Civil Aviation for taking over the infamous Centaur Lakeview hotel in Srinagar. Set against backdrop of majestic mountains and offering an amazing view of Dal Lake, Centaur Lakeview Hotel in Srinagar is jointly owned by Jammu and Kashmir government and Hotel Corporation of India (HCI). Sources said that decision of the tourism ministry to take over the hotel is direct consequence of protests by hotel staff and some other organisations of Kashmir valley over purported move of HCI to lease out hotel to Mumbai based real estate development company DB Realty for 30 years. DB group is one of India's top real estate developers, with presence in residential and commercial parks and gated communities. Confirming this, Minister of state for Tourism Nasir Aslam Wani said "We have formally approached union Ministry for Civil Aviation pleading them to handover the hotel to us so that the tourism circuit comprising of the hotel, SKICC and the Royal Golf Course could be completed." Though he did not elaborate on the reasons for seeking complete takeover of hotel but he did say that takeover would be beneficial for Jammu and Kashmir tourism department. He added that government is serious and would ensure that aviation ministry whose tourist extension Hotel Corporation of India (HCI) is co-owner of the 1200 bedded; five star centaur lake view hotel accedes to its request. "We are going to seek complete control over the hotel and also like to know, if the aviation ministry had actually made any move to lease out the hotel to some other business concern," added Wani. However, an employee of the hotel informed Early Times that government has took up the issue formally with aviation ministry after it came to know that the aviation ministry had cheated it and leased the hotel to Mumbai based DB realty without giving any prior information verbally or officially to the Jammu and Kashmir tourism ministry. He further said that employees of the hotel lodged a strong protest against this breach of trust by the ministry and its extension. "The land was leased out to HCI in 1982 for a period of 90 years and state government was named as co-owner of the hotel. Hence, it was made clear to the ministry and HCI that whatever decisions it would take must be assented by the Jammu and Kashmir government," added the employee of the hotel. |
