Perplexed police lift suspects in Udhampur double murder
2/3/2011 11:53:15 PM
ET Report
JAMMU, Feb 3: Police are perplexed over the double murder which rocked Udhampur town yesterday as even after over a day of the incident, they have not got any clue to either the identity, or the whereabouts of the killers.
The throats of MES employees -- Moti Ram (50) of Jib, Majalta, and Bodh Raj of Batal Baliyan -- were found slit in their duty room at MES power house inside the "high security" military cantonment area Wednesday mor-ning.
Police are working on different theories to unravel the mystery behind the murders. They feel it was not easy for an outsider to sneak into the tightly guarded cantonment area to execute the murders and then escape without being seen by anyone.
Under these circumstances, the possibility of the involvement of an insider in the macabre incident was not ruled out, a senior police officer said. He said some MES employees had been picked up as suspects and their sustained questioning was on. The record of the Udhampur MES office was also seized for scrutiny, he added.
The officer said as the victims' throats were slit, it did not seem to be the handiwork of local criminals who normally committed murders by stabbing below neck, or by spraying bullets.
He, however, hoped that special investigation team constituted to probe into the killings would soon get some lead in the case. The officer said when the families of the deceased were questioned, they said the duo did not have any enemity with anybody. Their colleagues were too clueless in this regard, he added. He said the SIT was likely to raid some places in Udhampur town and in its peripheries in search for the accused.
