Should Mushaal Malik wear a veil? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 3: The stunning beauty from Pakistan received a warm welcome when she arrived in Maisuma two years ago with her husband, Malik Muhammad Yasin, the chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Maisuma, which is situated just two hundred kilometers from Srinagar's city centre remains as conservative as it used to be six decades ago. The people were expecting a veiled woman in Maisuma that day. But as soon as Mishal arrived many brows were raised and many mouths opened. Yasin Malik, according to people close to him, believes Muslim clergy spend half of their life discussing what women should wear and what they should not wear. But in Kashmir separatism and orthodoxy cannot be separated. The campaign for introducing veil in the Valley gained momentum in 1990. Women activists from Dukhtaran-e-Millat would throw colour on unveiled women. The campaign evoked severe criticism and had to be abandoned. This was the time when cinema halls, video shops and liquor sores were closed down. The movement for `liberation of Kashmir' won a fundamentalist label. Since Yasin Malik and his group were active that time, he too got connected with it notwithstanding the JKLF statements to the contrary. The high profile couple, therefore, was discussed in newspaper reports. An Urdu daily crossed all limits of decency and used un-parliamentary language. The report, however, won Malik and Mishaal support from unexpected quarters. A senior journalist said: "Editors and reporters must stay away from personal lives of the people. Mushaal is an artist of international repute and cannot be expected to remain in veil." But then every person in Kashmir is not as prudent as the veteran scribe. An anonymous mail circulated widely in 2009 urged the Dukhtaraan -e-Millat Chief, Aasiya Andrabi to ask Yasin Malik why his wife was not using the veil. The mail also urged her to give up her campaign for promoting veil if she did not succeed in raising the issue with Malik. However, good sense prevailed on Aasiya and she ignored the mail. Mushaal is a dynamic person. When in Srinagar, she is very often seen in posh cafes along with her husband. The good mannered artist does not boast of her artistic achievements. Mishal has won many admirers in Kashmir for her prudence. She has never made a mention of veil, nor has Yasin. But Malik's supporters say: "We cannot impose Islamic tenants on the people. A person is at liberty to do what he likes. This holds good for Mushaal as well." |
