| Delhi, Washington to expand bilateral ties | | India-US military cooperation to get a boost | |
B L KAK NEW DELHI, NOV 10 Come November 16, military cooperation between India and the United States will get a boost. On November 16, the US Under Secretary of Defence, Eric. S. Edelman, will be in Delhi for the crucial meeting of the India-US Defence Policy Group. He will be joined by Lt. Gen. Jeffrey B. Cohler, who is heading the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). The DSCA oversees US military sales and financing programmes to foreign countries. Over the next few weeks a series of important events are slatred to take place--all meant to expand India-US bilateral ties in areas ranging from agriculture and business to counter-terrorism. Top US officials will be visiting India, one after another till the end of this year. US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Richard Boucher, kicks off the string of high profile visits. He will be also representing the US at the second regional economic conference on Afghanistan to be held here on November 18-19. It is officially stated that the highlight of the month will be the weeklong visit of the largest-ever American trade mission to India from Nov 29. The mission will be headed by US Under Secretary of Commerce, Franklin Lavin, and will include representatives of nearly 200 top US companies seeking to establish their presence in India. The mission follows a highly successful meeting of the CEOs Forum that was held in the US recently. India and the United States will sign a memorandum of understanding to expand bilateral cooperation in civil aviation next week. Federal Aviation Authority administrator, Marion C. Blakey, will be here on November 13-14 to sign the agreement that will build upon the existing open skies pact between the two countries. This will be followed by the visit by US Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Johaanns, who will discuss trade and agriculture issues to expand cooperation in this crucial area. John Pistole, deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), comes to New Delhi at the end of the month to consolidate growing cooperation in the area of law enforcement and counter-terrorism. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, visits India from December 19 to 24 to expand cooperation with India in fighting pandemics and diseases like polio, AIDS and malaria. |
