Chidambaram meets J&K Congress in two groups
Security review meeting with CM today, to visit Kishtwar

Jammu, Feb 3: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram who arrived here on two day visit was made to see the J&K Congress a divided house today. The senior leaders and functionaries who had assembled in the guest house met PC in two separate groups and even discussed issues specific to the interests of each faction. The Home Minister whose primary engagement this evening was to have exchange of ideas also in capacity of senior party leader with the J&K Congress leaders listened to both groups with equal attention. While the main PCC group was led by president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz , the other group had Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand in senior most capacity.
PCC chief who had in fact extended invitation to Home Minister few days back to visit the state in order to have interaction with the J&K Congress leaders on certain key political issues accompanied the PC from New Delhi. It was Prof Soz who led the main party delegation comprising senior functionaries of PCC, some ministers and legislators and held the meeting with PC at Guest House soon after his arrival this evening.However, the veteran leader Soz, exhibiting political maturity and experience, later downplayed meeting of the leaders in separate groups, contending he doesn't see anything wrong in it. " We all had to meet him to express our view point………I am the PCC president….I do not recognize or attach any significance to factionalism", Prof Soz said while talking to media after the meeting.
The PCC chief did not divulge in detail as to what were the key issues that came under discussion with Chidambaram. However, replying to a question the PCC chief said militancy and terrorism in the state are matter of concern. He said while decline has been registered in incidents and activities but some areas in Kashmir were still facing the brunt of it. " The soldiers will move around and reach the spot immediately on the command of officers where their presence is required……" Prof Soz said. "The Act (AFSPA) is not a panacea…..", the PCC chief observed, commenting on a query related to its revocation demand. "It is for the Centre to see to what extent situation is conducive for the step of revocation of Act as also withdrawal of forces from parts of valley…", the seasoned politician said on guarded note, virtually choosing to throw the ball into the court of central government on the vital issues.
The Union Home minister spent considerable time in listening to the party leaders on every issue. He is also believed to have briefed them about the steps the governments -both state and centre were likely to take in the offing in the wake of recoomendations made by interlocutors in their report. Later he rushed straight to Rajbhawan and had one to one meeting with state Governor NN Vohra on host of issues including prevailing situation in the state. During his visit, the PC will also take stock of the security situation and political developments in the state with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tomorrow morning scheduled at latter's residence.
Chidambaram will review the security situation both here and in the hilly district of Kishtwar, about 200 km northeast of Jammu, to find out about the 'ground realities', official sources said. He will fly to Kishtwar after meeting with Chief Minister and rush back to New Delhi tomorrow evening.
