| Action against Health Minister Sham would ensure the demise of Congress party | | |

JAMMU, Feb 4: Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday disclosed that the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, is contemplating action against Health Minister in the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government Sham Lal Sharma for what he said at Bani (Kathua) on December 5 during a public rally. He said the Congress high command has taken a serious note of Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma’s statement on Kashmir issue and a decision would be taken soon in this regard. If what Azad has revealed is correct, then the Congress is doomed. Sham had only said what he should have said and what he said was what the people of Jammu province, barring the agents of Kashmiri leaders in Jammu, believe in. Action against Sham would be construed as an attack on the people of Jammu province.
It appears that the anti-Jammu forces have ganged up with a view to poisoning the ears of the Congress high command against those in the Congress in the state who believe in equitable development of all the three regions of the state. It also appears that the opponents of the JKPCC chief and his supporters in the party have started lobbying for Omar Abdullah so that he continues to rule the state for a full term of six years. The very fact that Azad and Taj Mhi-ud-Din have publicly stated that the 2002 power-sharing formula between the Congress and the PDP shall not be revived and that the NC would rule for all the six years should clinch the whole issue and establish beyond any shadow of doubt that the anti-Jammu forces have become quite active. Hence, what Azad stated yesterday in New Delhi has to be viewed in this context.
After all what had Sham Lal Sharma said at Bani? He had not committed any crime. He had only presented a true story of facts and demanded justice for Jammu. He had referred to the prevailing unrest in the Valley and the discrimination with Jammu in the allocation of development funds. He had said that “there are voices emanating from Jammu that the only way out to ensure development of state could be Azadi for Kashmir, separate state for Jammu and Union Territory status for Ladakh region. A day later, he denied that he had talked about Azaadi for Kashmir, saying he was misunderstood.
Speaking in his mother tongue Dogri, Sham had reportedly said: "..Asse Dikheya Hai Je Jammu Kanne Discrimination Hoya Karda Hai.. Koi Azadi Manga Da Hai, Koi Self-rule Te Koi Autonomy.. Hartaalan.Disturbance.Indey Sabne Beech Jammu Ki suffer Karey.. Soz Sahib Main Tundi Te PCC Di Cream Ithay Baithi Di Hai Undi Izazat Kanney Ikk Gull Karna Chahana Ha Je Agar Eh Sab Iyaan Gey Chalada Reya Te Jammu Cha Bhi Ai Awaazan Uthaniya Shuru Hoi Gayiyan Ne Je Kashmir Gi Azadi Deyi Odo Ya Jyada Haq Dayi Odo, Jammu Gi Alag State Kari Deyo Te Ladakh Gi Union Territory status..Agar Iss Riyasat Da Vikas Karna Hai Taan. (We've seen that the Jammu is being discriminated against. Someone is demanding freedom, other is demanding self-rule and there are others in Kashmir who are demanding greater autonomy. Amongst these noises and disturbances in Kashmir, why Jammu should suffer? Soz Sahib, with your permission and the permission of entire `cream' of PCC office bearers, present here, I want to seek your attention towards this fact that if this all continued voices from Jammu too would start emanating that Kashmir should be given freedom or more autonomy, Jammu be given separate state and Ladakh Union Territory status…This is the only way out to ensure the development of the state…)"
It would be suicidal for the party high command to take action against Sham Lal Sharma. It must not forget that the Congress is already passing through a very critical phase and that Sham Lal Sharma is one MLA who had won the election in 2008 hands down. He had won the election because he had identified himself with the national cause and the cause of the people of Jammu province. Is it a crime to speak the truth and identify with the genuine national cause and the genuine cause of the people of Jammu province, who are being constantly humbled, insulted, taunted and ridiculed by Kashmiri leaders and their agents in Jammu? Azad would do well to advise the high command not to take any action against Sham Lal Sharma.
