Pre-budget discussions at Srinagar | Rather interacts with trade, tourism, intelligentia fraternity of Kashmir | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 5: In view of the ensuing budget session of state legislature, Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather today began exercise of pre-budget discussions. Rather interacted with representatives of travel, tourism, trade, chamber of commerce and industry, transport operators, intellectuals and academicians at Banquet Hall, Srinagar. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that pre-budget discussions provide an insight about the problems and requirements of various traders and business community. He said government endeavours to accommodate demands and suggestions presented during pre budget discussions in the budget to make it more people friendly meeting the urges and aspirations of the general public. He said these discussions helps to evolve a blue print for new budget formulations. The intelligentia gave suggestions as how the state’s economy could be improved and urged for promoting industrial culture in the state. Demands put forth by various trade bodies at pre-budget discussions included revision of state hydel policy, revival of sick industrial units, one time check at toll plaza at Lower Munda for the goods bonded for Srinagar, extension in the sales tax amnesty scheme, reduction in stamp duty, adequate funding for protection of the heritage Srinagar city from acute sewerage and drainage problem, interest subversion scheme for handicrafts, exemption from general sales tax in respect of the tourism sector including hotel industry for five years beyond 01-04-2011, infrastructure development in the form of godowns and terminals to boost LoC trade which has reached all time high of Rs. 199 crore in case of exports and Rs. 197.26 crore as imports from October 2008, when the LoC trade started, upto January 31, 2011. Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Federation (KHAROF) was represented by G.M. Dugga, Zahoor Ahmad Tramboo, Reyaz Shahdad and Asif Burza whereas the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry by Abdul Hamid Punjabi, Mushtaq Burza. The group of academicians and intellectuals included Prof. Shabir Ahmad Bhat, Department of Business School, Kashmir University, Prof. M. Sultan Bhat, Department of Geography, Kashmir University, Prof, Noor Ahmad Baba, Department of Political Science, Kashmir University, Syed Fayaz Ahmad, Registrar, Kashmir University. Government was represented, among other senior functionaries of Finance Department, by the Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Khawaja Bashir Ahmad, Commissioner Excise, G.A. Peer, Additional Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Kashmir and Mushtaq Ahmad, Commissioner, Finance, Commercial Taxes and R.K. Koul.
