Religious congregation attacked; 6 killed 40 injured in Pulwama blast
11/10/2006 10:52:00 PM

Pulwama, Nov 10
At least half a dozen people were killed and more than forty were wounded, ten of them critically when unidentified militants hurled a grenade outside a mosque in Tahab area of Pulwama district in South Kashmir, here this afternoon.
Official sources told News Agency of Kashmir that the incident took place at around 1:15 PM today when militants tossed a powerful hand grenade towards people, who had assembled to attend a religious conference outside a mosque.
People from different areas had assembled to hear Abdul Rashid Dawoodi, head of ‘Aehil-e-Sunnatal Jammat’, a religious organisation of Muslims. As soon as the crowd outside the mosque swallowed some unidentified person lobbed a hand grenade towards the crowd, which exploded with a big bang.
Panic gripped the area and people started running for their safety, sources said adding, the blast was so powerful that its sound was also heard in the adjoining village.
“There was panic everywhere as no body knew what to do”, said Rasheed Ahmed, one of the eyewitnesses. He said that the some people were running while blood pouring out of their wounds.
Police and Central Reserve Police Personnel rushed to the spot and helped the local residents to shift crucially injured persons to the local hospital. “The number of injured in the hospital was swallowing and even doctors and para-medicos felt short of man power to handle the increasing number of victims”, a local resident Ghulam Rasool said.
A senior police officer told News Agency of Kashmir that some critically injured persons were shifted to District Hospital Pulwama, out of whom four died on their way. Two more people later died while being shifted to Srinagar, he added.
Medical Superintendent of Pulwama Hospital, Dr Ashraf said that most of the injured admitted in the hospital have been shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment. “The injured shifted here include mostly women and children”, he added.
