Soz to brief Sonia on Congress affairs in Jammu Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 5: Ultimately the AICC Chief, Sonia Gandhi, has taken a serious view of the growing tussle between the loyalists, headed by PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, and the dissidents, led by Ghulam Nabi Azad, union Health Minister, in the state unit of the Congress. In this connection she has summoned Soz to New Delhi and the PCC Chief plans to meet Sonia Gandhi on Monday. Party sources said that Soz has been informed by his supporters, including several ministers, that a divided Congress had created a problem for them and for the running of the Government. Soz has been told that the activities of the dissidents had encouraged the National Conference leadership to take the Congress leaders, including the ministers, for a ride. According to these sources, Sonia has invited Soz after several leaders, belonging to the camp of the loyalists, had highlighted the difficulties they faced because of the activities of the dissidents to senior party functionaries whom they met in New Delhi last month. It was on the basis of the complaint of the loyalists against the dissidents Sonia Gandhi has decided to have a separate meeting with Soz and seek his opinion on ways to end the factionalism in the Congress. Sources close to Soz said that the PCC Chief may request Sonia Gandhi to suggest to Azad to remain away from the party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir on one hand and those supporting him and his designs be told to fall in line with Soz in the interest of the Congress and the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir. These sources said that he would also convey his displeasure over the latest statement of Azad in which he had said that G.M. Saroori had lost the cabinet post because of some conspiracy as the conspiracy theory was totally wrong. Reasons that led to his ouster from the cabinet, Congress sources said, were no longer a secret because of the impersonation case during the entrance examination. Sources said that if the dissidents were not tamed the state unit of the Congress would be gripped by Aaya Ram and Gaya Ram situation as some of the Congress leaders were seen present during meetings held by both the factions. In this connection the sources referred to Lal Singh M.P and said till three weeks ago Lal Singh used to be with the loyalists and now he has joined the camp of dissidents. The reason being that Lal Singh had been helped to win the Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seats in 2009 elections because of the support of Azad. The sources said that Lal Singh had been defeated miserably in the 2008 Assembly election from Kathua and even his wife lost the Basholi seat in 2008 which she had won in the byelection. Hence Lal Singh has joined the Azad led camp so that in the next Lok Sabha election he received Azad's support which was a trump card for him. What seems to have intrigued the Congress high command is the way the loyalists and the dissidents spoke against each other during their separate meetings with the Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram in Jammu on Thursday. Chidambaram too was informed about the crisis in the organisation which had been the result of patronage and open support the dissidents received from the Union Health Minister. Chidambaram had been told that the only way to ensure unity in the Congress was to keep Azad away from the party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir and instead devote his full time to the health ministry. |
