Rajouri farmers visit regional agricultural research station | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Feb 7: During a visit to Regional Agricultural Research Station of SKUAST-J in Rajouri, farmers from various parts of the district were oriented for improving their indigenous agricultural production systems with site specific scientific interventions. Visit of the farmers was organized by the Department of Agriculture. During this programme, farmers were apprised of various interventions technically feasible in the district Rajouri that have potential of improving existing agricultural systems with inherently low external inputs. Orientation programme was coordinated by Dr Anshuman Kohli, Principal Investigator of the project and Dr Majeed-Ul-Hassan Chesti, Co-Principal Investigator of the project. Farmers were shown prototype of a low cost and low external input vermi-composting unit developed at RARS, Rajouri that has a potential for composting various farm bi-products including dung and crop residues to produce high quality organic manure. Farmers were introduced to an exotic vegetable “Broccoli” which is also being promoted for cultivation in district Rajouri under the project. As a large proportion of the district is without irrigation infrastructure, concept of using agro meteorological advisories and rainwater harvesting and storage for irrigation was also elaborated to the farmers as an answer to the harsh environment in rainfed areas. Farmers were encouraged to go for cultivation of horticultural crops including fruits and vegetables to enhance their farm income.
