Azhar Memorial Cricket Tournament concludes
‘Sports activities vital for personality development’

UDHAMPUR, FEB-6:- Terming sports activities as vital for shaping over all personality of youth, Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, Abdul Gani Malik has underlined the need for holding regular sports events in different parts of the State especially in remote areas to encourage sports culture.
Malik, who was the chief guest at the concluding function of 3rd Azhar Memorial Tournament at Pouni, was addressing a large gathering of sportspersons and general public of the area. The Minister said that different sports clubs hailing from different areas could play a major role in spotting the hidden sports talent among youths by organizing such sports events so that the youth from different parts of the State could show their excellence in different games being organized at district, State and national level.
The Minister said that efforts would be made to develop Pouni Sports Stadium for the benefit of local players. For the purpose he assured that modalities would be chalked out with the concerned department for its execution in a phased manner.
Malik complimented the organizers and players of the tournament for holding cricket tournament at Pouni and distributed trophies and cash rewards to the winners and runners up teams.
The cricket tournament was organized by Azhar Friends Club, Pouni in which 16 cricket clubs from Reasi and Rajouri districts participated. The final match was played between MCC Reasi and Kheralaid Cricket Club which was clinched by MCC Reasi by 2 wickets. In the final Kheralaid Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat first. Sunny Malik of MCC Reasi was declared man of the match and series in the tournament.
On the occasion, prominent persons also put forth various demands which mainly include tehsil status for Pouni, upgradation of Primary Health Centre, construction of sports stadium, opening of Degree College, road connectivity from Pouni to Kalhar, tourist serai at Pouni, provision of Urdu teacher in different schools etc.
The Minister gave patient hearing their demands and assured that their genuine demands would be taken up with the concerned quarters for their redressal in a phased manner. He issued on the spot directions to the Chief Education Officer, Reasi for the posting of Urdu teachers in schools of Pouni area for the benefit of student community.
Among others, ex-Minister, Jagjeevan Lal, Chief Education Officer, Reasi, K.K. Sharma, senior officers and sports lovers were present on the occasion.
