Vertical split percolates down at grass root level
8 'Number count' strategy of Cong factions affects workers
2/6/2011 11:57:47 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 6: The furore over 'number count' organized by the two factions of J&K Congress in terms of the show of strength blow out of proportions by a section of media may have calmed down but it has not yet settled at the organizational level, with leaders in both factions trying to 'identify' the sources of crowd that made it to two separate rather parallel rallies on Jan 30. The tug of war or the war of nerves that preceded the rally for days has had a telling impact on the worker and cadres at middle rung of Congress who faced dilemma and confusion which one to attend. The factionalism which started at the top hierarchy has percolated down and caused a vertical split even at the level of grass root level workers.
There is no denying this fact now that it is a complete and vertical split in the party with workers and middle rung cadres also trying to draw the lines in terms of expressing their loyalties. Earlier, if this loyalty was only for and in the name of the Congress party, with the leaders in respective camps literally divided in two camps, the workers too are flocking in and exhibiting this loyalty towards their leader. In the past many times particularly when parallel rallies were organized, the workers sided with their leader no matter which camp he is in. And in the January 30 rally, workers were made to do a repeat of the similar exercise - be in line in the one where their leaders 'guides' them to be.
In other words, as the factionalism in the J&K Congress is growing and deepening by the day, the workers and middle rung cadres too are getting divided in camps. While there remains no confusion now for most of them which way to go in general or on particular political occasions on account of their unflinching support and staunch loyalty towards the MLA or MP he has chosen, there is a good lot of them at various levels whose first and foremost loyalty is still with the Congress party as a whole. These die hard Congress workers face dilemma when parallel functions are held at different places as it becomes apparently hard task to decide which one to attend.
The woes of such lot do not end here. With split having percolated down and the war of nerves between the leaders at the helm to count their strength on the numbers, the workers siding with two factions stand identified in their own areas and constituencies where they are expected to stand united as the face of the party. The identification tag at the level of villages by their heads or other senior functionaries have also resulted in the differences creeping up at workers level in many areas. The problem is being seen as having started even in areas considered to be Congress strongholds. But it is said to be more acute in the areas where more than two Congress leaders as representatives of people have equal hold and political clout.
Not only this, unfortunate as it appears, the workers also being made in stand in two camps, the leaders have started behaving in a ' vindictive' manner though not in a pronounced manner, in terms of not being helpful to a particular lot for no siding with them in rallies and other political functions where their presence matters to each camp. The workers have started feeling harassed on one or the other count. One wonders will the slit and division which may be helping individual leaders temporarily will ultimately augur well for the interests and strength of the party as a whole.
