| Avalanche warning issued 5 dead, 5 injured in Kargil rock slide | | Edu Minister's escort gypsy hits JCB, 2 cops injured | | sumit sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 6: Five people, including three children were killed and an equal number injured when huge pieces of rock slid from a hillock and fell on two houses in Kargil district of Ladakh region today. Officials said that the incident took place at Village Garkone situated on the Batalik Highway. And on the other side, Jammu and Kashmir disaster management cell today issued a medium-danger avalanche warning at Banihal on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as gusty winds blew across the summer capital, uprooting trees and electricity poles at some places Reports pouring in informed that rescue operations were launched immediately and police party along with medical team was deployed for rescue operations which were being monitored closely by Tehsildar Kargil. The rock slides were initially noticed by army personnel at around 1 am in the intervening night of February 5 and 6. Sources added that army informed the police immediately. Reports added that finding the situation worrisome, civil administration sought the assistance of army. Accordingly GoC 14 Corps deployed a unit of army to assist the local administration in the rescue operations. The dead have been identified as Tashi Gasu son of Tashi Tsering (38 years), Tsering Spalzes wife of Tashi Gasu (37 yrs), Tsering Gangzom daughter of Tsering Norphel (14years), Skarma Lamo daughter of Phunchuk Namgiyal (11 years) and Tsering Gangphail son of Tsering Norphel (14 years). Five more persons got injured who have been rescued and shifted to the District Hospital Kargil for medical treatment are Lundup Dorjey son of Tashi Gasu (15 years), Padma Chosfel son of Tashi Gasu (10 years), Kunzes Dolma daughter of Tashi Paljor (15 years), Kunzang gasu son of Tashi Gasu (18 years) and Rizgin Choral daughter of Tsering Dorje. SP (Kargil) Javed Iqbal Mattoo confirmed the number of dead and injured. He added that to avoid further loss of life, traffic along the national highway which was disrupted for hours has been diverted Chitkan road. Metrological department informed that minimum temperature was 3.6 degrees Celsius in Srinagar and 15.1 degrees Celsius in Jammu. Pahalgam hill station recorded a minimum of 0.8 degrees while Qazigund town on the Srinagar-Jammu highway saw a minimum of 2.6 degrees today. "A medium avalanche warning has been issued for Banihal area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as the prospects of snowfall have brightened during the day," said an official of the disaster management cell. Divisional Administration had yesterday directed the traffic department to allow only one-way traffic on the only road link between Kashmir and rest of the country in order to avoid any passengers or vehicles getting stranded on the road, he said. However, the traffic authorities allowed two-way traffic on the 294-kms road, paying no heed to the weather warnings, the official said. He said a similar warning has been issued for Sonamarg area on Srinagar-Leh road. Fresh warnings are in addition to the areas which have already been declared as avalanche-prone over next 48 hours. These areas include Gurez, Tangdhar, macchil, Keran and Gugaldara along the Line of Control in north Kashmir. The residents and security forces in these areas have been advised to avoid venturing close to the mountain ranges during snowfall and choose their routes carefully, in case of unavoidable circumstances for their movement. Police personnel posted along the banks of Dal Lake evacuated the tourists who were enjoying Shikara ride in the water body. So far, there are no reports of anyone getting injured or major damage to the property due to the winds. Meanwhile, nine persons including two constables received injuries in road mishaps occurred across Jammu district here on Sunday. Sources said that the cavalcade of Abdul Gani Malik, higher education minister, was heading towards Jammu from Udhampur when one of the escort's gypsies was hit by a JCB at Kamini Market area around 10.30 pm in Nagrota on Jammu-Srinagar highway. "Nagrota police immediately rushed to the spot and the wounded cops were rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital," sources said. Wounded police personnel were identified as Constable Jyoti Prakesh son of Bodh Raj, a resident of Kana Chak and selection grade constable Mohammed Akhtar son of Bashir Ahmed, a resident of Mahore in district Reasi While as in another incident, five persons received injuries in car and bus collision on National Highway under the jurisdiction of Vijaypur police station. They have been identified as Usha Devi wife of Sunil Singh, Vanshika daughter of Sunil Singh, Isha Bagat son of Ashok Kumar,Ishan Bagat son of Ashok Kumar and Asha Dewi. In another incident two more persons Jyoti Prakash of Sainik Colony and Swarn Singh of Gandhi Nagar received injuries when hit by a car under the jurisdiction of Channi Himmat police station. All the injured were admitted in GMC hospital by police after lodging cases in these connections. |
