Inaugurates photo-exhibition on Gujjar Tribe

JAMMU, Feb 7 – Governor N. N. Vohra today inaugurated a photo-exhibition, titled “Colours of Gujjar Tribe” organised by the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation at Kala Kendra, here this afternoon.
The four-day long exhibition will remain open for public viewing between 11 am to 6 pm daily upto February 10. In all, 30 photographs depicting culture, heritage, lifestyle and the habitats of Gujjar Tribe were on display. These photographs have been taken by the Secretary of the Foundation, Dr Javaid Rahi.
The Governor, who went around the exhibition at the Master Sansar Chand Gallery, lauded the quality of the photographs which depict the rich cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Gujjars.
In his observations, the Governor emphasized the need for publishing these photographs as an album with suitable comments, for wider dissemination. He added that photographs tell their own story and have their own importance, along side the historical records.
The Governor said that having worked and traveled in the hill areas for many years, over the past over five decades, he had had the opportunity of observing the lifestyle and culture of Gujjars, Bakerwals and Gaddis at very close quarters and added that these various tribes cannot continue to lead nomadic lives for all times to come, when so much change was taking place all over the country.
He opined that there was also need for setting up colonies for the settlement of Gujjars, Bakerwals with adequate facilities for grazing their cattle, processing of milk and marketing thereof, education of the children, health care of the nomadic families etc.
The Governor stressed that at least a 50 year perspective would need to be evolved while formulating policies for the development of various tribes so that they are adequately benefited under the various programmes and policies of the Central and State Governments and from the constitutional safeguards in their favour.
The Vice Chairman, Advisory Board for the Development of Gujjars and Bakarwals, Ch. Bashir Ahmad Naaz, expressed his gratitude to the Governor for taking keen interest in the welfare of the Gujjars, Bakarwals and other tribal communities. He lauded the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation for organizing this exhibition, which would go a long way in the preservation and promotion of heritage of the Gujjar community.
The art historian, Dr. Lalit Gupta, said that this photo exhibition is an effort to document the culture, lifestyle and heritage of the Gujjar community.
In his welcome address, the Secretary, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, Dr. Javaid Rahi, gave details of the activities of the Foundation and the photographs displayed in the exhibition.
The Vice Chairman, OBC Board, Kuldeep Verma, MLC Jehangir Mir, Media Consultant to the Government, Farooq Nazki, former Minister, Talib Hussain, Director Tribal Affairs, Ali Raza, President, Dogri Sanstha, Prof. Lalit Magotra, a number of intellectuals, writers, artists, prominent political and social activists were present on the occasion.
