Displaced Kashmir Pandits
No homeland, interlocutors likely to recommend ‘return formula’
2/7/2011 9:35:49 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 7: All indications are that the higher profile Jammu and Kashmir interlocutors are unlikely to recommend carving out a homeland for the displaced Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir valley.
Sources said that instead of conceding demand of Kashmiri Pandits for a homeland within the valley, interlocutors are likely to recommend lucrative measures that could motivate and encourage displaced families to return to Kashmir.
Sources said that Dileep Padgaonkar, who heads the three member team of interlocutors, was informed about the demand of homeland for the displaced people by a senior Pandit leaders settled abroad. These NRI's have conveyed to Padgaonkar that under the current security scenario and the slogans that were being raised in Kashmir, it was not feasible for the displaced families to return to their villages and towns in Kashmir.
These NRI's have supported the Panun Kashmir demand for a homeland within the valley where not only Pandits but people of other religions who had faith in the constitution of India and secularism could live there. But it is being widely believed that interlocutors have turned down the demand and instead have assured the community leaders that they would recommend to the government measures for ensuring honourable and dignified return of displaced families.
It may be mentioned that over 3.50 lakh Panidts had migrated from Kashmir in 1990 following the rise of militancy related violence. Centre is keen to create conditions which could encourage displaced families to return to Kashmir. It is in this connection that over 2,000 Pandit youths have joined duties after they were appointed in various Government offices under the Prime Minister's employment package for the displaced youths.
Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla said that necessary infrastructure was being built in Kashmir where migrant families could be rehabilitated. Referring to Pandit employees, he said that they were fine and enjoying their stay in valley.
