Fingerprints can prove to be best evidence in Udhampur double murder | | | bharat bhushan EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: Fingerprints, which are the best evidence in any police investigation to place an accused at a crime scene, are so far the only vital clue that police seem to have got in the February 2 sensational Udhampur double murder. MES employees -- Moti Ram and Bodh Raj -- were found murdered with their throats slit inside the "highly-guarded" military cantonment area of northern command in the wee hours of February 3 morning. The macabre incident had come as a surprise for police, especially because it occured inside the army cantonment where the entry and movement of outsiders was strictly prohibited. "We have collected fingerprints and these can lead us to the identity of the criminal, or criminals who have executed the murders," SSP, Udhampur, Surinder Gupta said. The fingerprints were vital evidence because these could be matched back to those of the accused and positively help in establishing that he had been at the scene of the crime, he added. The SSP said as the involvement of someone residing in the cantonment area was not ruled out, police had already begun the process of matching the fingerprints collected at the crime scene to those of the suspects. Soon after the incident, a police team, under the supervision of the SSP, had protected the crime scene as it was the most important aspect of the evidence preservation. This was done to keep the evidence uncontaminated till it was collected. FSL men too had picked up certain evidence from the murder scene. Their report was awaited. Gupta said police were working on different theories to unravel the mystery behind the murders. Investigators feel that it is not easy for an outsider to sneak into the tightly-guarded cantonment area to execute the murders and then escape without being seen by any of the army guards. Police investigation was also focussed on the insider's role in the twin murders. Police had picked up some MES employees as suspects and their sustained questioning was on. The record of the Udhampur MES office was also seized for scrutiny, police sources said. As the victims' throats were slit, it did not seem to be the handiwork of local criminals who normally committed murders by stabbing in the areas below neck, or by spraying bullets. Sources said when the families of the deceased were questioned, they said the duo did not have any enemity with anybody. Their colleagues too did not know about it. The SSP said they hoped to make a breakthrough in the case soon |
