Flash floods leave four dead, several injured | Rains wreak havoc across J&K | | sumit sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: Torrential rains, gusty winds and snowfall on Monday wreaked havoc leaving four dead including a BSF porter and causing injuries to several persons including three security forces personnel in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir regions. Rain, which started on Sunday evening, triggered avalanches in several parts of the state and resulted in shooting stones on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, leading to its closure for traffic. "An avalanche struck at a forward post at Kabul Gali, Gurez on the Gurez-Mushkoo-Drass side. A porter died and four others, including three BSF men, were injured," said an official. An Air Force plane failed to make a sortie to the spot to airlift injured. "But the injured are being treated at Kabul Gali only. They could not be airlifted due to adverse weather," said the official. Victim of the avalanche has been identified as Jamal Lone, a resident of Gujran, Gurez. A day after the warning issued by Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Cell regarding medium-danger avalanche due to incessant rains, three persons were washed away in flash floods while several others were rescued by police and army in different areas across Jammu region. Three persons, including a 9th class student, were washed away in flash floods at Banihal area of Ramban district while as at least 30 Bihari labourer families were trapped in flash flood in Mendhar Tehsil of Poonch district were safely rescued in a joint operation launched by army and police here on Monday. Further, ten sheep were buried alive under the debris of a temporary shelter which collapsed in a village at Mendhar due to incessant rainfall since last night. Army, Police and civilians today rescued six peoples from flash flood near bus stand Mendhar. According to Police reports six peoples got trapped in Mendhar river near Bus stand Mendhar, After getting the information, police team lead by SHO Mendhar Kuldeep Sharma rushed to the spot and with the help of locals and Army launched a rescue operation. All six persons were rescued in the afternoon. Those who were rescued have been identified as Alias Ahmed son of Kanta, Sharief-ul-Nasar son of Alias Ahmed, Tufiq Ahmed son of Allias, Quasim son of Alias Ahmed, Razia Khatoon wife of Khalid Hussain and Sajjad Ahmed son of Mohammed Sharief. A Kaccha house got collapsed due to heavy rains at Gursai village in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch District. Police reports maintain that a Kaccha house of Mohammed Sikander son of Kalam Din collapsed due to heavy rains last night. According to inmates, 5-10 goats were reported. 300 Kilometer long Jammu-Srinagar highway was thrown open for traffic and stranded vehicles were allowed to head for Kashmir valley, official said, and added that traffic from Jammu to Srinagar would be allowed tomorrow. In a tragic incident, three youth who had left their houses in search of some work in the railway project at Banihal were caught in a flash flood while crossing a Nallah. One of them was rescued by the locals while two others were feared to have got washed away, locals of the area informed. The rescued youth identified as Shakeel Ahmed son of Bashir Ahmed of Village Maligam in Pogal area of Banihal has suffered serious injuries and he was hospitalized. The searches to trace out two washed away persons were on till late hours by the searching team. They have been identified as Rayaz Ahmed Runiyal son of Mohammed Irshad and his friend Roveed Ahmed son of Fareed Ahmed, both the residents of Maligam in Pogal (Banihal). Sources further added that a sixteen year old boy identified as Munawar Ahmed son of Mohammed Yaseen, a resident of Drupta Neel area in Banihal was also washed away in the flash flood while crossing a local Suranga Nallah. His body was, however, fished out from the water sources informed. Official sources said that at least 30 members of Bihari laborer families who were putting up near Mendhar Nallah adjoining to local masque were caught in strong currents of water. However, with the timely intervention of local police and army, all the members of labourer families were rescued. SDM Mendhar Mukhtar Chowdhary said that all of them have been shifted to the safer place. Furthermore, ten persons were rescued from river Chenab in Akhnoor area of Jammu city. Reports late in the evening maintained that efforts were on to rescue two persons namely Rajesh Singh and Ashok Sing, residents of Gangyal who were caught in flooded river Tawi near Belicharana. Efforts were also on in Akhnoor to rescue ten persons trapped in Chenab River in Gadkhal area. Meanwhile, one Irfan Hussain Choudhary of Ashok Leyland Transport Company based at Narwal Jammu lost only tipper truck to flash floods in Chenab River. However, he was rescued by army in an aerial operation. According to official handout, civil administration approached Air Force Station Jammu due to flash flood in Chenab River wherein Six civilians were stranded in a small island near west of Akhnoor River Bridge. Marooned due to strong and rising water currents, rescue of these people could not be carried out by boats. One tipper truck had already been swept away due to strong water current. Promptly responding to the distress call, helicopter based at Air Force Station Jammu swung into action and was at the site within 15 minutes. Last year, 47 persons caught in the flash floods in Jammu and Kathua region had been evacuated to safety. There are also reports that life remains paralyzed in Poonch town from last more than 10 hours as there was no road connectivity, electricity and telephone facility due to rains in Poonch District. Traffic remained off the road on Jammu- Poonch National highway due to slides at Sheen Dhara village in Surankote tehsil of Poonch District. The road was reopened for traffic late in the evening. "Highway was closed after reports of shooting stones at several places. We are clearing the stretches and might throw it open for the traffic in the evening," said a traffic official. More than 200 vehicles are stranded on the highway. "We returned passenger vehicles but goods trucks have parked on the highway only," said Lohai. Srinagar-based MeT official predicted "widespread rain and snow in the Valley and the Ladakh region in the next 48 hours due to huge depression caused by western disturbances". |
