| Srinagar-Jammu national highway opens for one-way traffic | | |

Srinagar, Feb 8: The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was reopened for one-way traffic today after a day-long closure due to snowfall and shooting stones from a hillock overlooking the arterial road.
''The highway, the only road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was cleared for one-way traffic early today,'' a spokesman of the traffic department said. He added that only Srinagar-bound vehicles were allowed from winter capital Jammu and the traffic was moving smoothly.
Traffic on the highway was suspended yesterday as incessant rains triggered shooting stones from a hillock at Panthal while snowfall resulted in slippery conditions at Jawahar Tunnel, gateway to Kashmir valley. Meanwhile, Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Raman Bhalla chaired a meeting of the divisional officers here and reviewed the availability of the essential commodities like ration, sugar, flour, K-Oil and domestic gas besides discussing steps for snow clearance, providing supply of electricity, potable water, availability of medicines in hospitals and installations of dewater pumps in Srinagar.
Meeting was attended by Divisional Commissioner, Asgar Samoon, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, M A Kakroo, Chief Engineers of various departments, Director Consumer affairs and Public Distribution, Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and other senior civil officers, an official spokesman said. He said that minister was informed that presently the stock of 24674 tons of rice, 2908 tons of wheat and 1677 tons of Sugar is available with the CAPD godowns and there is no need to panic.
Spokesman said that hundred trucks with essential items like ration, sugar, kerosene oil, domestic gas, and poultry are coming daily from Jammu to Srinagar and there is sufficient availability of stock dumped in the valley. Administration had pressed 75 pumps into service for drain out the water from the roads in the city, the spokesman said.
