Does Kar’s heart still beat for Pakistan? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 11: On May 10 last year, veteran Congress leader, Ghulam Rasool Kar while addressing a convention at Sopore made an `epoch’ making statement. He said: “Every Kashmiri is emotionally attached to Pakistan whether they are in Congress or National Conference”, he said. He also said that every heart in Kashmir (including his) beats for Pakistan. Kar made this statement as senior Congress leaders watched helplessly. He urged the Congress leadership to accept this harsh reality. “Congress should have cordial relations with Pakistan. The party must strive for resolution of all disputes with Pakistan especially the dispute on Kashmir”, he suggested. He also urged the government of India to start a meaningful dialogue with Pakistan. He said: “I am an Indian but I am pained to see Pakistan in trouble. When a Pakistani gets killed in a bomb blast, my eyes get moistened automatically. This is how every Kashmiri feels.” Interestingly even staunch separatists refrain from making a display of their proximity to Pakistan in public for obvious reasons. Kar’s`bold’ confession, therefore, generated interest across Kashmir. The aged leader was in New Delhi last week. He is believed to have discussed important party matters with the Congress Chief, Sonia Gandhi. Back home, Kar found no Congress workers to accord a warm welcome to him. Instead he was greeted by grenades that exploded in his house. The veteran leader must have missed many a heart beat. Condemning violence in all its forms and manifestations, a senior scribe commented on Kar’s statement and the recent attack on his house. “Does his heart still beat for Pakistan?” Well, Kar alone can answer. Kar came out of hibernation last year when the rift between Congress factions led by Soz and Azad deepened. A number of party workers were seen around him.
