Soz calls on Sonia, discusses party affairs, coalition matters

Jammu, Feb 8: President Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Prof. Saif-u-Din Soz called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi today. Prof Soz’s meeting with party President today assumed significance in the backdrop of some developments that took place both within the state unit of the party as well as between the two coalition partners in the state.
The PCC chief , sources said primarily informed her about the state of affairs in the party in J&K unit which recently saw two parallel rallies having been organized by the two factions in state which resulted in further deepening of the wedges and gap between the leaders and functionaries of the party. Apart from this briefing on party affairs, Prof Soz is said to have given an account of the concerns of the party leaders including ministers, senior leaders and legislators expressed during their meeting with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the winter capital of the state.

According to sources, the PCC chief conveyed to party Chief the concerns of his party verbally with regard to a host of issues related to the relations with the alliance partner National Conference. The issue of Congress demand on incorporating the amendments meant to empower Panchayats in the state also came under discussion. Prof Soz is believed to have conveyed to her that following pressure from the Congress , the government has sought a report on finding some alternatives to these steps before holding the polls in the state. In the detailed discussion with her, a range of issues were taken up pertaining to the party as also about the coalition between Congress and National Conference, the official release stated.

However, the sources said more importantly, it were the matters related to organization which came under the discussion between the state party chief and the AICC president. Prof soz is also said to have informed certain matters which were taken up by the coalition partners during the coordination committee meeting in recent past and the follow up steps taken with regard to each issue. The PCC chief also gave a brief account to the party president about the political situation in the J&K state and the response of the Congress in the state vis-à-vis the report of the interlocutors based on their interaction with various sections during the past few months.
Soz apprised Sonia Gandhi in detail about P. Chidambaram’s visit to Jammu on January 3 and his discussions with Congress leaders. The PCC chief is said to expressed satisfaction over the interaction of the party leaders with the Home Minister who in capacity of senior leader of the party listened to them on a host of issues. The PCC chief, sources said is believed to have urged fulfillment of the assurances which have been made by him during two hour long interaction with the party so as to address their concerns on all fronts.
He also explained that since the Home Minister had received reports from interlocutors, it was now necessary for him to have an interaction with political parties.
