Gear up for Panchayat elections: Sham | | | Early Times Report Jammu, February 9 Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today said that Panchayat elections are round the corner in the State and people should gear up to participate in the polls for their empowerment. He maintained that elections will be fought on non-party basis and people should elect the genuine representatives who can serve the society with commitment. Addressing a largely attended public meeting at Akhnoor town, the Minister said that Government was contemplating to amend Panchayati Raj Act to pave the way for the sizeable representation of the women folk. He said that State has already suffered a huge loss in view of delay in the Panchayat elections and efforts are being made to conduct the elections as early as possible, he asserted. To expand the road network of Akhnoor with other districts, the Minister said that two major bridges are under construction over the river Chenab. One bridge at Kathar which will connect Reasi and Poonch Rajouri is at the final stage and likely to be inaugurated within days. This vital link will reduce considerable distance between Reasi and Katra and thousands of people will be benefitted. The work on the other bridge at Mera Mandrian is also in full swing and will be completed within a stipulated timeframe. This would also improve road link with the villages located across the river Chenab. Both these project will cost over Rs. 50 crore, said Sharma. To give impetus to the tourism activities in Akhnoor area, the Minister said that Central Government has brought village Sumah on the National Tourist Map. To begin with the development of the village the Government has earmarked Rs. 5.12 crore in the first phase. In order to overcome the scarcity of drinking water in the kandi belt of Akhnoor, the Minister said that 18 deep drilling tube wells will be constructed at the vulnerable locations. He said that areas have already been identified and work will be taken up in a phased manner. To protect thousands of acres of fertile land located across the right bank of the river Chenab, the Minister said that a fresh proposal has been drawn up to channelize the river at the vulnerable spots. The survey has been conducted from Akhnoor to Mirpur Kona as Chenab River poses threat of floods to dozens of villages of these areas every year and large chunk of fertile land washes away. Various deputations and individuals called on the Minister and apprised him about the problems confronted in their areas. He gave patient hearing to them and issued on-the-spot instructions to the officers for redressing the problems. The Minister also distributed blankets among 102 poor beneficiaries of Akhnoor. All sectoral officers including SDM, Akhnoor and Chief Medical officer, Jammu and senior Congress leaders were present on the occasion.
