Repression won’t resolve Kashmir issue: Mehbooba
2/8/2011 11:46:46 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 8: Emphasizing that Kashmir issue cannot be resolved through brute use of force or repression, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today said that her party would continue to press for resolution of the dispute at the earliest.
Mehbooba was addressing meeting of senior party leaders, legislators, district and zonal presidents specially convened to review party’s course of action for permanent resolution of Kashmir issue. As part of the party program, large rallies are planned at Srinagar and Jammu on February 14.
Mehbooba said that people had suffered for decades on account of political instability and had affected its economy, human resource development and left deep scars of pain on almost every family. She regretted that government has failed in matching this sentiment with adequate response. Mehbooba said that after last summer’s peaceful demonstrations, it was hoped that government of India would initiate meaningful measures for a permanent resolution.
“The belief of the PDP is that a permanent solution to Kashmir issue alone would rid the place of an almost institutionalized denial of civil liberties” she said and declared that the party would continue its peaceful campaign utilizing fully the democratic space. Regretting undemocratic attitude of the government and its agencies, Mehbooba said it was not any source of comfort or pride for a democracy that an entire population should be advised to stay put in their homes after sunset to escape death.
Explaining various features of the party’s Self Rule agenda, Mehbooba told the party functionaries to bring home to masses its core elements and the fact that it was a program of hope and reconciliation aimed at liberating state from the siege that had engulfed it after the partition of the sub continent.
“In a world of shrinking distances and falling barriers Jammu and Kashmir stands out for its inability to benefit from the prime strategic location that nature had bestowed on it and PDP would fully focus on reopening of all these routes through Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu regions” she declared.
