SFC labourers demand action against MD
2/9/2011 10:47:52 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 9: In protest against harassment by officials at Bachan depot of State Forest Corporation (SFC), about one hundred laborers held a protest against the management.
They alleged that management is hiring new labourers and is throwing old ones out of job, who have given 20 years to the corporation. “Management is snatching our livelihood and engaging new laborers through a contractor after floating tenders for the same. MD has even violated J&K High Court order abstaining him from inviting tenders for engagement of fresh people at the depots”,
union leaders however appreciated sympathetic and positive attitude of Minister for Forests Mian Altaf, who had assured them that he will take up the issue with management. Addressing demonstrators, Chairman of the Union Sat Pal Sharma demanded inquiry in alleged irregularities committed by Managing Director of the State Forest Corporation (SFC).
Sharma said that labourers discharging their duties for last 25 to 30 years have virtually become the employees of the corporation, but management is treating them badly. “They have been working at Bachan depot, Bahu fort, Janipura depot, Sunjwan depot and Aik Depot for years together but now the management has started firing them”, Sharma alleged.
He said that despite the court order to bring laborers under the scheme of provident fund (PF) the MD is not caring for the same and not making deductions for the PF. Sharma alleged that management had floated fresh tenders for engaging laborers against which the already engaged laborers filed a writ in the High Court and the High Court served stay orders against the same.
Sharma further charged that apart from the directions of the honorable High Court vide its order of May, 6 2004, the corporation has not changed the service status of the members of the corporation of the labour union. Even the minimum wages to the laborers which has been raised by the Govt. @ Rs 110 per day are not being paid to the laborers. The Union has also demanded group medical assurance of the laborers working in all the depots.
Sharma further alleged that the MD is misguiding the Forest Minister and the Govt. that the laborers have gone on indefinite strike. “The actual position is that he is creating the conditions where the workers are not allowed to discharge their duties”, alleged Dharam Singh, president of the union.
