Drama over murder in Kathua
SI slaps Kathua NC leader, SSP denies
2/10/2011 12:14:31 AM
Early Times Report
KATHUA, Feb 9: Youth National Conference (YNC) leader of Kathua district was allegedly slapped by a police sub-inspect who was in plain clothes in SSP office Kathua where he was allegedly protesting against the lax attitude of police in investigating a murder case.
Eyewitnesses said that it all started when District President of Youth National Conference (YNC) Harpreet Singh Sethi who was leading a delegation of the relatives of one Raj Kumar son of Dewan Chand, resident of Ambi Kharkra in Kathua, found dead under mysterious circumstances, was told to leave the office premises after he was allegedly raising too much of noise inside the SSP's office.
Police sources said that while the SSP J.L.Sharma told Sethi to leave and allow him to interact with the family members of the deceased, Sethi refused and instead began shouting loudly. Finding him obstructing the official work, police sources said that a sub-inspector asked him to leave. They added that when Sethi refused, the said SI tried to push him out of the SSP office.
"The two began pushing and pulling each other. No one slapped the leader. It was his abusive behaviour which led to police talking action against him. He is exaggerating the incident," said a police official. He maintained that police is already investigating the case, for which the said NC leader had approached them alongwith the relatives of the deceased.
SSP (Kathua) J.L. Sharma when contacted said "He is a local NC leader and son of a policeman. He had come here alongwith the family of a person who was found dead under mysterious circumstances. No one caused any physical harm. His charges are baseless." He added that the case is already under investigation and police is in close contact with the family of deceased.
"We are doing our work and I assured the youth leader about the same," Sharma said. However, refuting the police version, District President of Youth National Conference (YNC) for Kathua district Harpreet Singh Sethi alleged that Sub-inspector Kailash not only slapped him but also abused him. "He pushed me, slapped me and abused me in the presence of SSP who was watching the entire happening," Sethi alleged.
"I was leading a delegation of a family whose only bread earner has been murdered a few days ago. Police is trying to hush-up the case and I had gone to plead SSP to speed up the investigation. But police preferred to silence my voice," added Sethi. He has demanded action against the accused sub-inspect and also sought intervention of Chief Minister for initiating a thorough probe into the murder case.
